Costa Rica, Republic of (Press Release) July 25, 2008 --
The scientific name of the white faced monkey found through out Costa Rica is Cabus capucinus. It is also called as the white throated monkey or alternatively, the capuchin monkey. This capuchin monkey is considered to be the most intelligent among the New World Monkeys.
Essentially native to Central and South America, the white faced monkeys have small slender bodies covered in fur, which is either black or brown. They are often spotted in various national parks (Santa Rosa National Park and Manuel Antonio National Park) and reserves (such as the Cabo Blanco Reserve) in Costa Rica.
The white faced monkeys are arboreal (live perpetually on trees and rarely come down to the floor of the forest) creatures that possess a typical white or cream colored faces, necks and the chests. They are highly social (live in the troops of twenty monkeys on an average), use chatters to communicate and are perfect omnivores. The omnivore mode of feeding opines that the white faced monkeys eat everything whether it is a flower, fruit or insects, invertebrates, small lizards, crabs and bird eggs. For the first three months after their birth, the baby monkeys cling to the back of their mothers. They are highly effective agent for the seed dispersal as well.
The destruction of their natural habitat and poaching for pet purposes are the biggest threats to the white faced monkeys at present in Costa Rica. Edward R. Mercer (one of the biggest real estate developers in Costa Rica) has done pioneering work in the field of saving the mother monkeys that were targeted by the poachers. The strategy of the poachers was to snatch the baby monkeys after killing of the mothers and then later on, sell the babies as pets to people in exchange for high prices. Ed Mercer boosted the security of the island in such an effective manner that the population of the white faced monkeys is now significantly higher as compared to the scenario ten years ago. His dedication to the threatened wild life species, not doing it for recognition, undoubtedly paved the path toward his recent induction into the Environmental Hall of Fame.
