RECESSIONARY FEARS AREN’T ALL
THAT KEEP LOCALS UP AT NIGHT
TAMPA – While the nation’s economy – and Florida’s in particular – is causing sleepless nights among residents throughout the Tampa Bay area, it’s not the only thing. Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are on the rise and can lead to serious health consequences. These include heart attacks and stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression and impotence. Traditional treatments including surgery and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices work for some sufferers and their beleaguered bedmates. However, these alternatives have drawbacks and are not the right solution for every snorer or sleep apnea patient.

Finally A Simpler
Solution That Works
“About 30 million Americans snore and 18 million suffer from sleep apnea,” said Dr. Gy Yatros, a Doctor of Dental Medicine and founder of Dental Sleep Solutions, “and too many of them don’t realize it or realize what can now be done to help them.”
New technologies have made it possible to custom-craft a device that patients wear in the mouth while sleeping. These oral appliances are fitted by Dr. Yatros who has received extensive, specialized training in the use of these often life-saving – and even marriage-saving – devices. They are far more comfortable than the CPAP which involves a head-strap, hosing and bedside machine. And they are more likely to be used by patients who cannot adjust to the CPAP regimen. They are entirely non-invasive, unlike traditional surgery. In fact, these dental orthotics have already become the first-line of medical treatment for patients with snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnea. They are FDA-approved and covered by health insurance for OSA.
Tampa Office Opens
On Davis Islands
Dental Sleep Solutions, which has offices in Manatee and Sarasota counties, recently opened a Tampa office at 1 Davis Boulevard in Tampa.
“The stories after stories I have heard in my offices from patients whose lives and relationships have dramatically improved spurred me to make this breakthrough technology available in Tampa,” Dr. Yatros said.

solution for each patient’s condition. He also works with area dentists who believe their patients may benefit from a dental orthotic.
Dr. Yatros crafted his first dental orthotic for a sleep apnea patient in 2001. It changed the patient’s life enormously, he said, as well as his own.
“I have seen my dental work positively transform lives in the past but nothing was as rewarding to me personally as seeing the changes I helped make through dental orthotics,” he said. He decided to focus his practice on dental sleep devices and formed Dental Sleep Solutions in 2006.
“I never thought when I went to dental school that I would be able to help people in such a dramatic way,” Dr. Yatros said.
Exactly What
Is Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) occurs while sleeping, when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat, blocking air flow into the lungs. Lacking oxygen, the brains awakens the sleeping person to breathe (up to 300 times a night), depriving the person of essential REM sleep and causing a host of medical and other problems associated with chronic lack of sleep. Resulting symptoms of the condition are loss of energy, daytime sleepiness, forgetfulness, morning headaches, trouble concentrating, anxiety and depression. Left untreated it can cause high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, memory problems, weight gain, impotency and headaches. Studies show that patients with OSA face a five times greater risk of heart attack than non-sufferers.
The orthotic appliances Dr. Yatros makes for patients are designed to realign the jaw or the jaw and the tongue in relation to the airway. They prevent snoring and sleep apnea by establishing an open airway and allowing normal air flow. Best of all, they’re comfortable according to Dr. Yatros’s patients.

From Treatment Plan
To Sleepful Nights
Dr. Yatros first provides potential patients with a no-cost initial consultation to assess the risk of OSA and determine suitability for orthotic appliance therapy. Following that consultation, he conducts a two-hour new patient evaluation including x-rays, photo documentation, oral health examination and cancer screening. At this visit, impressions are taken from which the appliance is made.
The next appointment occurs about three weeks later during which the appliance is fitted and adjusted, and the patient is educated as to its care and use. Two weeks later an evaluation appointment is scheduled to see how the appliance is working for the patient. He or she is further educated on working successfully with the device. A sleep recorder is then taken home and if the reading shows that levels are within normal limits, the patient is referred back to the his or her sleep physician for a follow-up sleep study. Three-month and annual evaluations are recommended but Dr. Yatros gladly meets with patients whenever necessary.
Sleeping Is
Believing
Dr. Yatros’s patients at Dental Sleep Solutions literally rave about their satisfaction with his work. Bernard Gladstone, a 86-year old from Bradenton, was told by his doctor that he suffered from obstructive sleep apnea. After a sleep study, he was prescribed a CPAP device.
“I struggled for weeks with a full face mask, then a nose mask,” Gladstone said. “A patient who was using the dental appliance raved about it, so I went to Dr. Yatros and tried it.”
Gladstone’s results? “It’s great!,” he exclaimed. “I sleep with it every night without any problems – no mask, no machine, and it’s easy to carry when I travel.”

Another apnea-sufferer receiving treatment at Dental Sleep Solutions is Thomas Gaskill, a 63-year old also from Bradenton.
“I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and I am CPAP intolerant,” Gaskill said. He was fitted for an oral appliance by Dr. Yatros.
“I now wake up feeling rested and with adequate sleep,” he reported.
Dr. Yatros is a 1989 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, at the time of his graduation he was the youngest graduate in the dental school’s history. He began in private practice on Anna Maria Island in 1992. Dr. Yatros is one of only 400 dentists worldwide appointed by CRA (Clinical Research Associates), now known as Gordon J. Christensen Clinicians Report, to independently evaluate new products. He is a member in good standing of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and numerous other dental and sleep disorder organizations. Dr. Yatros has appeared as an expert dental professional in broadcast media interviews as well serving as a speaker in dental medical professional conferences.
Dental Sleep Solutions has offices in Holmes Beach, Sarasota and Tampa serving residents of Manatee, Sarasota and Hillsborough counties. For more information, log on to www.dentalsleepsolutions.com or call (813) 388-1156 to schedule a free initial consultation.
