Governor Signs Law Allowing Segways on NY Public Ways

Poughkeepsie, NY – August 4, 2008 – Last month New York Governor David Paterson signed into law, legislation allowing the use of Segway PTs on sidewalks, bike paths, and low speed roadways under similar rules that govern bicycles. The legislation, which closely mirrors laws that currently exist in forty-two other states, defines the Segway PT as an Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD).

With gas prices well over $4.00 per gallon, New Yorkers need an alternate form of transportation that can ease their dependency on oil while allowing them to be environmentally responsible. While the Segway PT can’t solve all of our oil problems, it can certainly play a serious role in the solution!”

A Segway PT can travel 24 miles on 10 cents of electricity – the energy equivalent of 450 mpg with zero emissions. When compared to an average car, a Segway PT helps reduce the impact of global warming because it creates 14 times less greenhouse gas
(93 percent reduction) and is 4.5 times more energy efficient than a hybrid car … very impressive numbers indeed.
