The Catholic Business Journal (http://www.catholicbusinessjournal.biz) interviews Bill May, founder of Catholics for the Common Good (http://www.ccgaction.org), and chair of CatholicsforProtectMarriage.com. May, who was appointed by the Catholic California Conference of Bishops to chair the CatholicsforProtectMarriage.org in its lay recruitment and volunteer mobilization effort, delivers a fascinating interview.
An engineer with a long and diverse career at one of the biggest oil companies in the country, May talks about his segue into high tech and then into the most surprising career turn-about imaginable, motivated by a deepening understanding of his Catholic faith. In this Q&A interview, May shares practical insights that changed his life and dramatically influenced the way he lives his Catholic principles in the workplace.
When asked about the Yes on Proposition 8 campaign in California and its national impact, May replies: “In May, the deciding vote of a single California Supreme Court Justice threw out the definition of marriage as only between a man and a woman, the definition that was passed by 61% of California voters in 2000. Proposition 8, which is on the November ballot, would put the definition of marriate into the California State Constitution as only recognized between one man and one woman. The future of the family hangs on the outcome of this proposition…
“At this point we are beyond tolerance and acceptance, and we are now facing compliance and obedience to a new standard of marriage, of the human person. People have been tolerant and accepting as a culture – but this law, this court decision, has changed the standard and created a new one…Catholics and others who understand the meaning and nature of marriage will be counter-cultural and seen as discriminatory or bigoted. It opens the way for lawsuits and challenges to tax exemption.
“The stakes are high. We are battling for the survival of the family as we know it, as God established it….Proposition 8, the Marriage Protection Act, is the most important thing that has ever been on the ballot in California history! People around the world are watching carefully.”
