Vegetarian Paul McCartney Urged To Save Cows

(Free-Press-Release.com) September 16, 2008 -- Paul McCartney and members of the UK Vegetarian Society of which Sir Paul is a patron have been urged to use their proxy vote at the AGM to introduce a welfare standard for cows.

It's estimated by animal rights organisation Animal Aid that 30 per cent of the UK's Dairy products now come from battery farmed cows, kept in zero grazing factory farm sheds and fed GM soya or grain.

Presently Paul McCartney's Vegetarian Society have no minumum standards for cows and dairy so they could be unwittingly approving products produced in this way.

This means that The Vegetarian Society and it's Seedling food manufacturing approval scheme has lower animal welfare standards than the UK organic Soil Association, The RSPCA Freedom Foods scheme, The Campaign In World Farming, the retailer Marks and Spencer and possibly McDonalds.

In fact it appears that even the arch enemy of all vegetarians (except pseudo veggie Posh Spice Victoria Beckham) F Word TV chef, puffin and horse eating Gordon Ramsay has higher animal welfare standards than the founders of modern vegetarianism.

In a recent interview Gordon Ramsay revealed that he insists on buying meat for his restaurants that have been ethically bred and collected. "That's absolutely paramount," he said. "We have traceability across the board, where we have a certification of whether it's organic beef, or whether it's a hand-picked scallop or a line-caught sea bass."

A Campaigner from www.poor-cow.co.uk said today "We are hoping that Sir Paul McCartney will step in on this issue as he did on the GM issue that led to the Vegetarian Society banning GM ingredients in approved products. He has been a loyal patron of the Vegetarian Society and helped on many occassions and we believe he will have serious concerns about both animal welfare and the dangers of genetically modified foods fed to cows"

The present Vegetarian Society Trustees are advising members to vote against the 'poor cow' motion as they fear the Vegetarian Society could lose clients.

'Poor-Cow' Campaigners point out that The UK Soil Association currently celebrating organic fortnight have the highest animal welfare standards in the UK and have over 10 times more products approved than the Vegetarian Society.
