FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 17, 2008 --
CHICAGO, IL - Sept. 10, 2008 (PRB) - When ex-realtor Lisa Lashawn** launched the website http://www.IHateMortgageBrokers.com in late July, her goal was to provide comic relief for foreclosure victims. The site, a promotional page for http://www.AngryMobtshirts.com features brash, funny t-shirts targeting Mortgage Brokers. Instead of providing comic relief, she incited outrage throughout the Mortgage Industry.
The controversial website made National and International News by blaming unethical Mortgage Brokers for the Mortgage crisis. The website received thousands of hits. Hits from angry Mortgage Brokers that is... Many of whom didn’t appreciate Lisa's views or her sense of humor. Outrageous Enterprises LLC, the company that owns the site, was besieged by hate mail.
On the website readers can post comments. I was expecting feedback from foreclosure victims, but 90% of it's from Mortgage Brokers Lisa says. My assistant tried to delete the really vicious comments, however the same people would write again demanding to know why their original comment wasn't posted?
Lisa then told her to turn off the comments completely. That back fired. The next morning when her assistant went to check the company e-mail, there were a dozen e-mails with "You turned the comments off!" in the subject line.
Most of the Mortgage Brokers who wrote, argued the foreclosure crisis shouldn't be blamed on them; but on the Lenders like Fannie Mae, Indy Mac and Country Wide; who created “Adjustable Rate Mortgages†and other exotic loans that got so many borrowers into trouble. They also mentioned that foreclosure victims knew the risks involved with these loans.
The self-righteousness in some of their e-mails and letters were just astounding†Lisa says. I guess it's easier for them to blame lenders and foreclosure victims, rather than look in the mirror and admit they've sold crap to people.
Lisa expected the negative attention to trail off after a month or so, however she was wrong. I couldn't understand why we kept getting hits on the website, when there was no advertising. The company installed a tracking code on website to reveal the source of traffic. Lisa and her staff soon found out the website had gone viral.
There were inbound links to http://www.IHateMortgageBrokers.com from news organizations, blogs, message boards and forums. The website was also getting a traffic boost from Google search engines. When you type in various keywords pertaining to Mortgage Brokers our website pops up on the first page. Go Figure.
A petition for stronger regulation of the Mortgage Industry was initially featured on the website; However Congress passed new laws the same week the site was launched. Lisa closed the petition and thanked Congress for saving her the headache. She says many of the signatures were from Mortgage Brokers who used the comment option to berate other signers.
As for those infamous t-shirts featured on the site, most of the sales haven't come from foreclosure victims, but Mortgage Brokers. The T-shirt design "I'm an honest Mortgage Broker," with the word "Honest" penciled in, is the biggest seller. Lisa says that Managers are buying them for their entire office.
Some Mortgage Brokers are actually getting a kick out of this whole thing. One even suggested ways to improve the website†she concludes.
