How did breastfeeding become fashionable?

(Free-Press-Release.com) September 23, 2008 -- Go back about seven years and breastfeeding wasn’t high on anyone’s agenda. Breastfeeding has always known to be benefical to mother and baby and is practised in many cultures and is a life line for newborns in third world countries.
Mothers who did want to feed in public either couldn’t and were a subject of staring or asked to leave by the establishment.
The pressure of the health service to treat illnesses which could have been prevented by breastfeeding has been increasing and the taxpayer pays the price.

But still breastfeeding was a subject rarely touched by many – so what changed?
Actually it was years of work behind the scene by many organisations such as babymilkaction.org and the national childbirth trust which bought the subject to the fore. In May 2006 the breastfeeding manifesto was produced in consulation with twenty other organisations with the sole aim to promote the benefits of breastfeeding.

Suddenly people started taking notice – the government took on board the research and started endorsing the promotion of breastfeeding at every touch point an expectant mother had. Breastfeeding counsellors and helplines were set up to for all to access. Breastfeding awareness week was launched and companies were asked to voluntarily class themselves as ‘breastfeeding welcome’ places
The turnaround was further compounded by celebrity endorsement claiming that it helped them to bond with child but also made them get back into shape.
Breastfeeding fashion has changed now, gone are the days where you had to do with a t-shirt, now retailers are selling good quality clothes to support new mums to feed in public.
