Pet Lovers Beware of Internet Scams!

It sounds great at first. The internet has proven to be a great place to connect with people who share a common interest. However, pet lovers should be cautioned that unscrupulous people are scamming the innocent and trusting in order to make money. Those interested in adopting a dog or cat are asked for “adoption fees” or “re-homing fees” for non-existent pets.

Bobbie Thompson, of Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) says, “We’ve reported them to the Internet Crime Complaint Section of the FBI, but so far have not received anything about stopping them.” SPCA International feels it is very important that people know how to spot a scam. The number one indicator of a pet scam is the insistence for you to give money upfront for vet bills, a reward, or shipping. “It is truly tragic that scammers are willing to take advantage of animal lovers’ compassion,” states Stephanie Scroggs, SPCA International Director of Communications.

The experts all agree you should know exactly who you’re dealing with, upfront, before any money changes hands. The safest way to adopt that puppy or kitten is to check with your local SPCA about adoptions in your area or visit your city’s animal shelter.
