Bali is an extremely beautiful picturesque island located in the westernmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia, lying between Java to the west and Lombok to the east. Over the years It has become a long time jewel in the midst of South-East Asian and Indonesian Tourism. It is a small island full of rice paddies and volcanoes with lush tropical forests and beaches lapped by the Indian Ocean. Travellers immerse themselves in the sublime beach and village life and the aura of the magnificent temples. The island is also surrounded by coral reefs, therefore is a great place for diving. With beautiful beaches, magnificent temples, lush national parks, steeped in history and with a good economy, this island is a popular place for travellers and holiday makers alike.
Where to stay:

Partygoers head for the towns and main resorts of Kuta and adjacent Legian. Kuta is Bali's most popular beach destination with an 8km long stretch of golden sand and plenty of shops, accommodation and nightlife. The quieter beaches on the east coast of Candi Dasa and Padang Bai or Lovina and Nusa Lembongan on the north coast are more appealing to people seeking a bit more peace and solitude. Many visitors also spend time in the cultural centre of Bali, Ubud city which thrives on traditional and historical painting, carving, dancing and music-making. Dances are held here every night and the streets are lined with art galleries and juice bars. There are beautiful elegant Hindu temples to visit in particular at Tanah Lot, Batukau and Besakih. There are also volcano hikes such as the popular route up Gunung Batur. The capital city is Depansar which lies near the southern coast.
What to do:

Bali is well known for its world class scuba diving sites as the island is surrounded by coral reef and provides a wealth of marine life. The dive sites offer a wealth of diversity with shipwrecks, volcanic outcrops, limestone shorelines and submerged reefs offering shore and boat diving. You can expect to see many kinds of tropical fish and marine life including mantas, whale sharks and oceanic sunfish. Snorkelling locations are also available at places such as Tulamben, Amed, Padang Bai and Pemuteran/Menjangan, so non-diving partners and children can also enjoy day trips or safaris. Surfing is also popular in Bali particularly popular are the beaches along south Bali, where there are many surfing schools. There are also many retreats in Bali , such as yoga and meditation schools which can be found in popular tourist areas and also in more remote areas for much needed peace and solitude. There are also beautiful national parks and waterfalls to visit and volcano hikes which leave from the city of Ubud. Bali is steeped in culture and history and one can easily spend days exploring the ancient Hindu temples dotted about the island or meandering around the art galleries of Ubud. The centre of Ubud is also popular for its shopping where one can easily pick up a bargain or two at one of its local markets. There are many parties happening at the main resort of Kuta where one can dance the night away. Or you can simply relax at one of the beautiful tranquil beaches on the east or north coast.

When to go:

Bali is 8 degrees south of the equator and stays at a temperature between 21 and 30 degrees throughout the year with the mountains being cooler. Direct sun can feel very hot especially during the middle of the day. During the wet season from October to March the humidity can be quite high and oppressive; the tropical downpours come as a relief to cool everything down. The dry season from April until September is generally a better time to visit, it is drier and sunnier although downpours can occur at anytime. The climate also varies across the island with the coast being drier and hotter, but with a cooling sea breeze while in the mountains the temperature can become quite cool and sometimes wet. There is no real difference between the seasons. The island attracts most tourists between mid June until mid September and during the Christmas and New Year period although prices at this time of year can rocket and accommodation can get booked out weeks in advance.
Air-con is not a necessity in Bali as there is normally a sea breeze that cools everything down and the common Balinese style of open bamboo windows makes the most of the light breezes.
Culture and history:

Bali has a population of 3.1 million and the island is home to the vast majority of Indonesia’s small Hindu minority. 93.18% of Bali's population adheres to Balinese Hinduism, while most of the remainder follow Islam. Bali Hinduism, which has roots in Indian Hinduism and in Buddhism, adopted the animistic traditions of the indigenous people, which inhabited the island around the first millennium BCE. This influence strengthened the belief that the gods and goddesses are present in all things. Every element of nature, therefore, possesses its own power, which reflects the power of the gods. A rock, tree, dagger, or woven cloth is a potential home for spirits whose energy can be directed for good or evil. Balinese Hinduism is deeply interwoven with art and ritual, and is less closely preoccupied with scripture, law, and belief than Islam in Indonesia.
It is also the largest tourist destination in the country and is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, and performing arts. Balinese percussion orchestra music, known as gamelan, is highly developed and varied. Balinese dances portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana but with heavy Balinese influence. Famous Balinese dances include pendet, legong, baris, topeng, barong, and kecak (the monkey dance).
Bali has Portugese and Dutch influence originating from early settlers in the 1500’s.

There are two main festivals in Bali. The Gulungan festival is an annual event and Bali's major feast. It is held throughout the island. During this ten day event all the gods come down to earth and the barongs(mythical lion-dog creatures) prance from temple to temple and village to village. The last and most important day of the festival is Kuningan.
Nyepi (the Hindu Balinese new year) is another major festival of the Hindu calendar is at the end of march or the beginning of April. The day before is set as a day of purification across the island with bells, cymbals, gongs, drums and flaming torches are used to noisily chase away evil spirits. On the day of Nyepi itself everyone stays quietly at home making no noise and tourists are encouraged to stay in their hotels. The idea is that when the spirits descend they will think the island is uninhabited and move on for another year
Getting around and getting there:

Balis major airport Ngurah Rai International is situated 2.5 km from Kuta. It links to all major destinations worldwide. With many direct flights to cities in Europe and flights to the US via Hong-kong, Japan, Korea or Taiwan. Taxis and metered cabs can be hired from the airport for the short journey into Kuta.
Island hoppers can catch one of the frequent ferries coming from neighbouring Java and Lombok.
The main form of transport around Bali is the cheap buses than run on set routes between towns. You can also easily hire a car, motorcycle or bicycle. The Balinese drive on the left. Tourist shuttle buses running between major tourist centres are more expensive than local transport but more reliable and comfortable.

Practicalities and money:
The official language is Indonesian but English is spoken in tourist areas.
The currency is Rupiah.

Electricity is 127/230V 50Hz.
Please note: Travellers are advised to check with their local embassy or travel advisory for up-to-date information regarding travel to Bali. Terrorist bombings took place in the well-known tourist areas of Kuta and Jimbaran in October 2005 and further bombing attempts have not be ruled out.
Local time is GMT + 8.
