This fall, many Americans are following the trend to button-up – at least when it comes to their careers. And a career makeover is quickly becoming the preferred accessory to do just that.
“Without a real need to update my resume for over a decade, I was surprised at how much had changed in the job search environment,” said Gary Wright, a recent career makeover recipient. “The Internet has added so many new elements to how resumes are searched, and the search process itself has evolved greatly. I really needed a tune-up on my whole approach.”
Offered by companies such as Career Movement, an executive search and career enhancement firm based in Philadelphia, career makeovers provide a 360-degree evaluation of the candidate’s skill set, as well as a comprehensive plan featuring strategies and tactics to market the candidate.
“In our industry, we have a front-row seat to how the implosion on Wall Street is having a trickle-down effect into jobs everywhere,” said Tony Petrucci, President of Career Movement. “Career marketability is going to become a critical factor in how well people navigate through this difficult time.”
Petrucci said the idea to provide career makeovers came to him when his firm recently launched a new Career Coaching division.
“We had this huge base of customers, busy professionals who needed a lot of help in every aspect of career management,” he said. “Some needed to take a fresh look at how they positioned their resumes. Others needed pointers on interviewing techniques. Still others needed more personal attention and dialogue around their potential for upward mobility or industry transition.”
In Gary’s case, he utilized a series of Career Movement’s on-line tools, as well as one-on-one coaching, to complete his makeover, and said the process exceeded his expectations.
For Mark Evans, a Dallas-based sales manager, the Career Movement Career Coaching tools helped him gain the confidence he needed to make the jump from a career in the food service industry to his current role as a district sales manager.
“Career Movement Career Coaching is now on my gift list for my other cohorts
who are still in restaurants, working their tails off, trying to make a decent living for their families” Evans said. Petrucci said these are the types of success stories that make him proud of his work.
“My dream has always been to help others find the career of their dreams,” he said. “Now that we’ve brought career coaching into the mainstream, anyone who is really serious about taking control of their destiny can do just that.”
