New research from global intelligence firm, IDC, is predicting the impact of the economic recession for Australian businesses, and it’s not good news for most.
“Systemic shocks such as the current financial crisis, change in interest rates and in exchange rates are likely to have profound effects on all sectors of activity”.

The report not only points to the industries that will be most hardly hit, but also notes places where possible savings can be made, as business search for relief from expenses.
“For example, outsourcing and telecommunications are efficient ways of saving money by decreasing the level of internal staff and reducing travel expenses”.

IT research analysts, Gartner, have conducted similar research which will form the basis for their ITxpo which will primarily focus on this “period of economic uncertainty”.
Research from Frost and Sullivan is decidedly more positive, suggesting that there are opportunities for businesses to examine operational costs and take advantage of new service offerings as Telecommunication companies put their best foot forward to demonstrate their innovation.
"The use of information management tools can be integrated with productivity tools such as workforce management and performance management tools, in order to increase efficiencies."
“For example, information can be used to deploy resources in the field optimally. Field workers can be directed to the nearest job using mobile devices that have access to corporate information. The job and paperwork can then be completed saving them time by using the mobile device rather than returning to an office.”

The clear message is that it’s not all ‘doom and gloom’, and the thought leaders in the applications of ICT technology are already employing many of these operational models to their businesses.
As the world slips into what the media is calling the “worst financial crisis in generations” clear winners and losers will certainly emerge based on how well they embrace direction from leaders in the market.
