PLANO, Texas -- A Plano man who has survived four brain hemorrhages and two surgeries has written a book to show others how to be inspired to survive.
Les Duncan and his wife of nearly 40 years live a happy, normal life full of daily walks and frequent rounds of golf.
The couple has been through a lot together, including trauma that has, at times, left Duncan blind, hard of hearing, and unable to walk or get out of bed.
"I have a genetic condition which causes the blood vessels in my brain and my spine to become tangled and knotted and sometimes those bleed. Mine have bled four times and I've had two brain surgeries to try to repair and remove those vessels," said Duncan.
Surviving the surgeries and his genetic condition inspired Duncan to share his story.
"I said to myself, 'You know, you've learned a lot of what it takes to recover and go on to live a successful life after having a serious illness and you kind of help a lot of other people by passing that knowledge along,'" said Duncan.
Using a healthy dose of humor, Duncan wrote the book "Brain Storms ... Advice For People Who've Survived A Major Illness."
"Here are the Top 10 reasons why it isn't so bad to have brain surgery: No. 1, Morphine -- as much as I want it." Duncan's experience has already helped his own family, including his youngest son who has the same genetic condition.Duncan's experience has already helped his own family, including his youngest son who has the same genetic condition.Duncan's experience has already helped his own family, including his youngest son who has the same genetic condition.Duncan's experience has already helped his own family, including his youngest son who has the same genetic condition.Duncan's experience has already helped his own family, including his youngest son who has the same genetic condition.
Recently Duncan has begun to receive letters from people who found inspiration from his writing.
"The purpose of the book is to help other people and to know that I helped someone," said Duncan.
