WMX Systems, LLC, a provider of advanced converged voice and data services provided critical support to news media on election night in the battle ground state of Colorado. Media supported included print, radio and TV from local, national, and international news organizations following election night developments from temporary Colorado Republican Party campaign headquarters set up at a Denver area hotel.
WMX Systems and its cutting edge technology partners provided up to 14 Mbps synchronous wireless Internet and some 25 telephone lines independent of the hotel’s network to members of the press covering this historic election. The technology challenge was that the hotel had no excess Internet or telephone capacity to support the media in reporting on this crucial, one-night event. WMX delivered the necessary service on time and on budget.
This event marked the turning point in how elections are covered. In the past, TV crews required expensive satellite trucks and service to transport video back to their studios which might be only a few miles away. Media crews were dependent on the hotels limited number of telephones or scratchy cellular service to phone in their reports. This election, WMX provided unlimited (relative to past experience) Internet bandwidth and high quality VoIP service. Media crews clocked a collective 5,400 minutes of VoIP talk time during the election night event.
This event followed closely on WMX’s earlier success story in supporting the national news media during the Democratic National Convention offering WiMAX and other services to the media for live High Definition TV broadcasts. “This is the wave of now,” remarked WMX Systems founder, Frank Ohrtman, “It’s only a matter of time before we’ll be seeing a lot of national networks dumping their half-million dollar satellite trucks in favor of far less expensive WiMAX, VoIP and other IP-based broadcast technologies.”
Technology partners supporting WMX Systems ( www.wmxsystems.com ) included Red Rocks Data Center (www.redrocksdatacenter.com) who provided high-bandwidth, on-demand, high-quality of service (QoS) Internet access and Live Wire Networks (www.livewirenet.com ) who provided VoIP services and network integration. The team is focusing on a wide range of “just in time” voice video and data support operations.
