LeafsOfTalent.com CEO Cites Some Extended Effects of Brownnosing To Preserve Job Security
Contrary to what some Job Coaches may prescribe John C. Sudds, LeafsOfTalent's CEO believes that brownnosing is not a gratifying tradeoff for job security.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 7, 2008 --
For Immediate Release:
As jobless rates peak and businesses seek to cut operational expenses some employees may panic and in the process use brownnosing as a tool for job security. Below John Sudds provides 5 key points on the effects of brownnosing in the workplace:
1. Brownnosing emphatically breaks down the integrity of a company and would likely make employees more susceptible to future pink-slips. Companies must maintain well-trained and well-advised employees managed through a complex system of corporate audits, fair employee evaluations and equitable promotional standards.
2. Brownnosing diminishes a company's overall ability to properly gauge its employees' strengths and weaknesses subsequent to management condoning the behavior.
3. Brownnosing tears down overall morale as other employees, particularly high performers, may suppress valuable knowledge useful to the company; some employees may even lose a desire to go beyond the 100% performance mark which may carry-over into profits.
4. Brownnosing leads to improper relationships between management and their subordinates accounting for ineffective leadership, and perhaps relationships that goes beyond professionalism.
5. And in the final analysis if one chooses to take the brownnosing route for the lack of ambition toward learning his or her job, being inept or otherwise, you can rest assure some boss will eventually figure you out and your behavior may lead to an undesirable pink-slip.
FIVE (5) ALTERNATIVES TO BROWNNOSING AND PRESERVING JOB SECURITY:
1. Through aggressive knowledge gathering and work experience KNOW the requirements of your job and know how to do your job well. Be more than just an employee, be a "valuable" corporate asset.
2. Know who your company's customers are and KEEP them happy. This could result in positive feedback on your behalf from the sources of income that actually sustains the company. The more happy customers there are the higher the likelihood that your boss will see you as a valued asset, even if he or she does not admit it openly. It separates you from your peers and builds staying power should discussions of future job cuts arise.
3. If personal overtime is required on occasion then don't be the loudest complainer as it might be the one complaint that sticks out in your boss' mind in the days, months or years to come.
4. Stay proactive on the job - be a "GOGETTER." Don't wait for your boss to tell you to accomplish tasks when you know what needs to be done. If instructions are needed then acquire them and get the assignment done ahead of schedule.
5. Without being intrusive or disrespectful, remain open and candid with your boss. Always tell the truth even when it's hard to do. I'm willing to bet that most bosses appreciate honesty; it's a sure sign of loyalty and a willingness on your part to mitigate unpleasant circumstances.
