I had the pleasure to be introduced to the sweet sounding Ocean Bre Taylor this week by Burn Unit Records of Durham, NC. Yes, the same Burn Unit Records who gave us the hot tracks from MerCee. "Pick & Choose" is the name of her first single. I don't know how or where Burn Unit is locating this talent, but they are definitely on a roll!Well, to review Ms. Taylor's cut, I had to pull out my all star new school R&B playlist which includes the sounds of Beyonce, Keyshia Cole, Fantasia, Rihanna, etc. You get the picture. I mixed in the cut from Ocean Bre Taylor, "Pick & Choose," and put the playlist on random. "Pick & Choose" came on between a track by Ashanti and Kelly Roland and guess what, I actually like "Pick & Choose" better than the Ashanti and Kelly cuts!

MerCee & Burn Unit Records are at it again. This time, MerCee hits you hard with "No Joke" a track title which immediately made me think of the classic by Eric B & Rakim. I know, I know, MerCee and Rakim in the same sentence! Just hold on and let me explain. I was surprised to see and hear it too.

I started this track with Eric B & Rakim in mind and MerCee did too! But that is where the Rakim references ended! MerCee is paying homage to Eric B & Rakim and show mad respect with the track. He uses a small sample of the Rakim track's music but the beat is so slowed down that you really don't mind the sample and it actually enhances the song just right.
