Interior Design & New Construction - Part I
Part I of a series dedicated to exploring the myths behind interior design's role in new construction.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 20, 2008 --
A friend of mine and I were catching up one evening a few months ago, when he informed me that he wanted to start building a new home. Though he knew I worked for Studio 2.0 Interior Design Consultants, he was surprised to learn that we could assist him with designing his new home from concept to completion. He had mistakenly assumed that we at Studio 2.0 could only assist with renovations or material selection. Our conversation surprised me, yet got me thinking about how many other people had the exact same misconceptions. Through our conversation I was given the opportunity to clarify the main misconceptions my friend had.
[Misconception #1] I should only hire a designer when I have a renovation project.
[Truth] At Studio 2.0 all of our Interior Design Consultants have been trained to work on both renovations and new construction by using the latest version of AutoCAD software to develop design drawings for floor plans, ceiling plans, electrical plans and millwork designs. It is a great idea to get a Interior Design Consultant involved at the planning stages of a new home, this way you can be comfortable knowing your home has been thought through completely from a design perspective. You can be assured that you are getting sound advice from individuals whose entire life passion is dedicated to this field. We are fully capable of designing and tailoring your floor plans to meet your specifications for a new home.
[Misconception #2] My cousin is an Interior Decorator, can’t she do the same thing as an Interior Designer?
[Truth] Often Interior Designers and Interior Decorators are thought to be the same position with two different titles. However, this is an incorrect misconception. According to Charlotte Jensen, the President of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification, she states “decoration is the furnishing or adorning a space with fashionable or beautiful things. Decoration, although a valuable and important element of an interior is not solely concerned with human interaction or human behaviour. Interior design is all about human behaviour and human interaction.” Therefore, interior design focuses on how a person would use the space and establishes a design plan including AutoCAD design drawings, electrical design, etc. to best suit these interactions.
Adrienne Zvacek, Studio 2.0’s Principal Designer clarifies, “when trying to determine which design profession to hire you must assess your project. Will your project include removing walls, adding ceiling dimension, relocating fireplaces, changing window sizes and shapes or any other large scale changes? In this case you need an Interior Designer. If you are doing only cosmetic changes like selecting a wall finish or upgrading your interior look, then you need an Interior Decorator.”
