Candles are safe products. Yet, thousands of families lose their homes and memories each year due to accidental house fires caused by the improper care of candles. According to the National Fire Protection Association, more than 15,000 candle fires are reported annually. Experts say that most of these incidents are due to a lack of attention to basic fire safety.
“Candles have a long history for providing light, decoration, and even home fragrance. They can add warmth and create ambiance in your home”, says Tylesha, owner of Butterfly Effects (http://www.OurButterflyEffects.com) an internet-based soy candle company. “Sadly, many consumers forget that candles are an open flame. Full understanding of the care and safety guidelines for burning candles can help reduce deaths and loss this holiday season.”
“If you have a candle in your home, there is a safety label attached, but if you don’t understand why these guidelines are important it’s hard to remember them when you are enjoying your candle,” she says. Here are some important tips for keeping your home safe.
Always keep a burning candle within sight.
Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.
Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
Don’t place candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or even your husband.
Always use a container holder specially designed for candle burning.
The holder should be heat-resistant, sturdy, and large enough to catch wax drippings.
Only burn candles on a stable, heat resistant surface.
This will also protect against possible heat damage to your counter or table surfaces, as well as, prevent the glass from cracking or breaking.
Always protect your candles from debris.
Burn candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans or air currents.
This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame.
Trim wicks down to ¼ inch before lighting.
Never burn a candle on or near anything that can easily catch on fire.
Keep burning candles away from furniture, lampshades, plants, bedding, books, carpet, flammable decorations or curtains.
Always read and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions carefully.
Never burn a candle all the way down.
Extinguish candles when they get within two inches of their holders or decorations.
Never touch a burning candle or move a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid.
Extinguish candle if it flickers repeatedly, smokes or the flame becomes too high.
The candle is not burning properly and the flame isn’t controlled. Let the candle cool, trim the wick and check for a draft before re-lighting.
Place burning candles at least 3 inches apart.
Be very careful if using candles during a power outage.
Flashlights or other battery operated lights are safer options when you are bumping around in the dark.
