In order for your renovation or new construction project to be successful you need a solid understanding of your goals. Most people benefit from help in determining and compiling a list of goals and a plan for the design of their space. This is where an interior design firm such as Studio 2.0 Interior Design Consultants can be of great assistance. Think of your design plan as a project roadmap that highlights your timelines, budgets, goals, priorities and “feel” of you’re space. Your design plan may consist of specific items such as floor plans, kitchen design, ceiling design and lighting plans, and may include a more general plan about material selection and color schemes. Throughout the project you may end up deviating from your original design plan slightly, which often happens, but the plan gives you a place to start.

After the planning is complete, it is important to bring other professionals onto your team, such as a general contractor if you are renovating, or a builder if you are building new. At times homeownersmay decide to act as the general contractor for their project, but before deciding to do so you must weigh the pros and cons. On the pro side, doing so may be a cost savings control and you could have more flexibility over your project, however, this position is very time consuming and you will then be responsible for finding, coordinating and overseeing the necessary subtrades. Though there is a cost to hiring a contractor/builder, he or she may have existing arrangements with specific suppliers, which allows products to be obtained at a lower price than retail clients have access to. One of the ways contractors/builders are able to get this pricing is by utilizing specific suppliers.

In order to ensure that your renovation or new construction is as enjoyable and free from worry as possible, it is vital you have confidence in all of the professionals working on your project. Other than your interior designer, the person you will be working closest with is your contractor/builder. When hiring a professional choose someone with technical expertise, a proven track record, warranty, someone who provides a written contract and above board service.

When deciding who to hire, ask around; ask people you know who have experienced their own renovation or building project, or ask construction suppliers whom they have used in the past or can recommend. Professional people often align themselves with whichever industry-specific professional association is available to them in their community. The same is true of contractors/builders. For example, you could use the Saskatoon & Region Home Builders’ Association’s website to find a list of members who are potential contractors/builders. Short list your options to approximately three.
