Executing Your Design Plan - Part II
Most people benefit from the help of an interior design firm in determining and compiling a list of goals and a plan for the design of their space.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 24, 2008 --
Make initial contact with three contractors/builders and determine their level of experience, and anticipated start and end dates. As well, ask if the contractor/builder has predetermined suppliers. Having predetermined suppliers can take the guess work out of finding your own suppliers. Determine if the contractor/builder will be receiving special pricing on supplies and if the savings are being passed to you. If there are no predetermined suppliers then you will have a lot more flexibility in selecting from a wider range of products. Don’t let this wide selection of products overwhelm you; your interior designer can assist you in selecting the best products to meet your requirements.
If you are looking for a builder for a new home, determine if the builder constructs custom homes or if they have preset model homes. If you already have a design plan for a custom home completed, you will want to find a builder who appreciates your vision. If any of the three contractors/builders you contacted make you uncomfortable or are too busy to take on your project, select another option.
It is important to interview potential contractors/builders, in person if possible, to determine how they operate, what they think of your project, and if they have any ideas that may make your project even better. Ensure that you have a copy of your design plan with you. During your interview, be aware of the contractor’s level of professionalism and of the rapport between you. Courtesy, respect, punctuality and the ability to communicate are some of the most important attributes a contractor/builder should have next to their basic competency. No matter how competent a person is, if you are not comfortable around them or if they are unable to adequately answer your questions, do not hire them.
Ask for and check on at least three current references. Ensure your potential contractor/builder has successfully completed a similar project to your own, and that former customers were pleased with the level of communication, service, quality and price. It is useful to use a number of sources to cross reference the quality of work. Therefore, you may want to contact the Better Business Bureau and/or other members of the construction industry to see what type of reputation each contractor/builder has obtained.
