Do you feel a little blue after a special holiday get-together, like Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Hanukah? Maybe it’s time to celebrate what’s good in life every week with a twist on the conventional happy hour – Thursday Happy Hour . A new tradition started to help reduce stress, refocus on what’s really important, and better connect with loved ones.
Created by photographer Gary Allard and writer Shelly Bowen, Thursday Happy Hour is a reminder to take a break from increasingly busy schedules to light candles and dim the lights, toss together a few munchies and beverages, turn on some tunes and sit together and talk – regardless of where you are.
“It’s just too easy to work-work-work and never really see each other. I don’t want to one day look up, exhausted, and see that 10 years have gone by unnoticed,” Bowen says.
They’re definitely on to something. According to a growing number of health studies, including from the Mayo Clinic, spending quality time with friends and family – as well as moderate alcohol consumption, especially red wine – can help reduce stress and improve your health and emotional well-being.
Because friends and family are spread across the states, Allard and Bowen started a record of Thursday Happy Hour at www.thursdayhappyhour.com to virtually share the tradition. You’ll find them at home, with friends at a lounge, in another city or state with family (yes, they do include children), or outside by a campfire. The result is a weekly report of warm (and delicious) memories you can make yourself.
