You've come across them too
I've been researching the local competition and I keep finding bad web designs. I mean bad in terms of arriving at a homepage and sitting there trying to figure out where to go to get the info you want. It turns into a cat and mouse game of trying different links to see where they take you. Often times, web designs like this are so bad that you end up leaving the website & resorting to the competition.
GOOD web design tells you where to go with common link names that people will recognize. In other words, don't use fancy marketese words that mean nothing to visitors of your website. It's always good to deliver usability/functionality over unique website design.
Here are examples
Serta (bad)
Click on "Products"
You'll notice the mattress names are the only guiding factor for selecting one.
No prices, description, details, specs... nada.
Select Comfort (good)
Click on "Beds"
You'll notice that the beds are ordered by a Series number and respective price
Prices are ordered to make selection much easier.
Meet visitor expectations
Web design should focus around what your visitors expect. GIVE them the links to the obvious information. Give them the information they want right up front. That way, you'll never have to worry about visitors leaving your website frustrated... at least because of that anyway. BTW, I didn't end up buying a Serta. :)
