Winnetka, IL -- Children will read when exposed to stories that are exciting, compelling and involve a subject that interests them. In that spirit, each year, Stuart Brent Children’s Book Club (SBCBC) offers its list of unusual and/or unique children’s titles. These are not necessarily the most well-known books, but ones which offer something “different” – a special story to which a child may latch on or unique subject matter that might appeal to a perhaps otherwise disinterested child. The list is designed to serve as a resource for parents looking to facilitate their child’s joy of reading.
This year, SBCBC’s Top Ten List of Children’s Books includes the following:
Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Underneath by Kathi Appelt
My 100 Adventures by Polly Horvath
The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey by Trenton Lee Stewart
Our White House: Looking In, Looking Out Various authors
Masterpiece by Elise Broach
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
How I Learned Geography by Uri Shulevitz
Jack and the Box by Art Spiegelman
Tribal Alphabet by Nan Richardson
According to SBCBC founder Amy Brent, who heads the book club, “One of the keys for getting children to read and to enjoy reading is finding the right books. That means discovering books that are exciting to that particular child. Often, that is no easy task.”
Brent should know. In heading the organization that carries the name of her father, well-known bookseller Stuart Brent, it’s Brent’s job to uncover those books that will appeal to the individual tastes of every one of the club’s one-thousand plus members. As members of the club, each child completes a survey outlining their interests. Each then receives their particular series of books, individually gift-wrapped with their name on the package as well as a copy of the Book Club Gazette, a quarterly newsletter offering reviews by other children, literary fun facts, information on authors, etc.
As Brent states, “This holiday season, when many may not be able to give their children the usual smorgasbord of games, electronics and clothing, in the long run, it might be more beneficial to give them a far greater gift – the gift of reading.”
