When it comes to socking people, local martial arts teacher Denny Strecker and his students are experts. Last week Streckers team collected 1,418 pairs of socks to help the needy and homeless in the greater Detroit area. The martial artists met weeks in advance and created 20 “Sox Boxes” to collect socks before the bad weather hit.
“It was none too soon,” said Strecker. “We collected our Sox Boxes for the Tumaini Center in Detroit, when we arrived officers from the Detroit Police Department were working with the Tumaini staff and an Emergency Medical Team assessing the needs of an elderly gentleman found curled up in the snow blocks away. His clothes were soaked and he needed warm, dry clothes immediately.”
The Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO) Tumaini Center is a Unit of a diverse Human Service Agency that provides crisis and support services for the homeless population in the city of Detroit. The center provides substance abuse prevention, mental health assessment and referrals, limited primary healthcare, case management, education, storage, emergency food, clothing, housing placement, showers, and laundry services for some of the most disenfranchised adults in our community.
Strecker, owner of Denny Strecker’s Karate, used the project to teach his young students a practical lesson in how easy it is to help others. He plans on continuing his sock drive throughout the winter and is looking for public and private elementary and middle school teachers who would like to have their students participate in the next sock drive.
