Internet Gambling and Freedom in Kentucky

Madisonville KY – More than one Kentuckian is very upset with Governor Steve Beshear’s recent opposition to internet gambling based on the revenues leaving the state. In fact, some citizens, like Curtis Staggs of Madisonville, see the Governor’s activity as tyrannical in nature. “It’s really not a gambling issue,” says Staggs, “It’s not about whether you believe in or support online gaming, it’s about freedom and liberty. You have to ask yourself, do I really want the government invading the privacy of people’s homes over a game? Is that the role you want your government to play? As for me, I say emphatically, unequivocally NO! Government should not be violating the boundary of a man’s home on a whim.”

Currently the ACLU and the Poker Players Alliance, which has over 13,000 members in Kentucky, are involved in litigation to stop the state from this action. “This issue impacts more than internet gaming,” says Staggs, “If the governor of Kentucky is allowed to block websites arbitrarily, this sets a precedent for allowing states to dictate to internet users across the board. They can then regulate any behavior they want. I don’t think that’s how Americans want to live their lives and I'm sure that in the end liberty will prevail.”
