http://www.lostgolfballs.com Lostgolfballs.com has always understood the needs of the community when it comes to charitable giving. When Hurricane Ike hit the Texas coast on September 13th 2008, many lives were never to be the same. Displaced individuals were left without refuge, as much of the area surrounding the Galveston area quickly became torn to pieces. Lives were lost, homes became unrecoverable, and entire communities were in disarray. Hurricane Ike quickly became the third most costly storm in U.S. history. What follows is a brief summary of how Lostgolfballs.com successfully weathered the storm and also how they helped others via a charitable financial donation after the hurricane had passed.
Preparing for a hurricane's disasterous effects in a facility that processes 1000's of golf balls an hour is quite a task. Prior to Ike's arrival, all necessary precautions were made to ensure the Lostgolfballs.com complex would be as hurricane-proof as possible. Employees were home and confirmed to be safe as the eye of the storm crept closer and closer to Galveston. Many area businesses shut down early for the week in anticipation of the strong hurricane. UPS was one of those that did not operate on Friday, September 12th – and for a good reason. A 110 mph monster was about to visit, with an eye wall and forecast storm surge of epic proportions.
Early Saturday morning, September 13th, Hurricane Ike made landfall. Trees were ripped from their roots, fences were thrown like toothpicks, and glass windows popped like bubbles. This was miles away from the coast, so it could be imagined how truly terrible the damage was to the coastline. Due to the proximity of the landfall, many employees at Lostgolfballs.com had both their work lives and personal lives affected. A manager had his roof torn off and many other employees personally experienced property damage or definitely knew of someone in the area who had damage. The effects of Hurricane Ike were far-reaching and distributed without prejudice.
The Lostgolfballs.com facility itself was without power for four long days. Shipping was never interrupted though due to the proper plan and implementation of a backup facility. The web servers that control many valuable functions were never affected as they were hosted in a remote location. To get through the storm with zero downtime and all orders processed was a feat that many local businesses probably had wished they were able to accomplish. Obviously, matters would have been a lot worse if closer to the shore. Some business owners there were not only without power, but without a business to go back to.
Seeing how they made it through the storm relatively unscathed, Lostgolfballs.com decided to get together, reach deep into their own pockets, and make the best of a bad situation by donating to the American Red Cross. All together, Lostgolfballs.com, with customer support, was able to team up and contribute a significant amount of money ($747.28) to a wonderful charity that provides first-line response to the damaged areas. The American Red Cross donation was quite timely and very appreciated. It was exactly the type of gesture needed to start the rebuilding and resurrection necessary after an enormous life-changing storm.
In an interview with one of the Lostgolfballs.com employees, the following was expressed: "We realize our contribution is just one of many around the country, but we are proud to say that we are able to make a difference in the lives of those who suffered during the wrath of Hurricane Ike. Our customers know we consistently do the right thing in business and when it comes to raising money for Hurricane Ike recovery efforts, they know to expect nothing less from us."
