Online coupon websites growing in popularity this holiday shopping season

(Free-Press-Release.com) December 18, 2008 -- EL SEGUNDO, Calif. – With the recession forcing many consumers to be more frugal, more holiday shoppers are utilizing online coupon sites to snag bargains on holiday gifts this year.

The findings come after an internal analysis of traffic to the Internet Brands network of online shopping sites, which includes well-known coupon sites Bargainist.com, BensBargains.net, Boddit.com, DealLocker.com and UltimateCoupons.com.

"The numbers we're seeing are evidence that bargain hunting - particularly online bargain hunting - is really coming back in vogue this year," said Brian Nickerson, director of the shopping division at Internet Brands. "Consumers are finding that they can save an amazing amount of cash on gifts this year by using online coupon sites."

Among the findings of the Internet Brands traffic analysis:

- Traffic during the first two weeks of December has been up an average of more than 45% on the Internet Brands coupon sites from 2007

- Black Friday traffic was up an average of more than 55% from 2007

- Cyber Monday traffic was up an average of more than 70% from 2007

- Retailers with the most popular coupons include Walmart, Dell, Home Depot, American Eagle, Toys R Us, and Macy's

On a bright note for cash-strapped consumers, deals on coupon sites have gotten better since the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, and the trend is accelerating as Christmas approaches.

"We are continuing to see amazing deals coming through - this week on Bargainist.com, offers ranged from 40% to 80% off on items from many retailers," Nickerson said. "We think this trend will continue through the remainder of the season, and many merchants are offering free shipping up until the shipping deadlines to draw consumer purchases."
