School Administrators Union Applauds Selection of Rep. Hilda L. Solis as Secretary of Labor

December 19, 2008

AFSA President Jill Levy responds to President-elect Barack Obama's nomination of Rep. Solis as Secretary of Labor.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 19, 2008 -- Washington, DC – Jill S. Levy, President of the American Federation of School Administrators (AFSA), AFL-CIO, released the following statement in response to President-elect Barack Obama’s selection of Representative Hilda L. Solis as Secretary of Labor:

“By selecting Rep. Hilda Solis as the next Secretary of Labor, President-elect Obama has once again proven his ability to identify exceptional leaders for his Cabinet. Since being elected to the United States Congress in 2000, Rep. Solis has stood by working families and rates a 97 percent lifetime AFL-CIO voting record. She understands how to address the current economic crisis and supports states and localities in their efforts to avoid cuts to critical programs and tax increases. Rep. Solis’ support to fully fund the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), provide flexibility to education professionals, and her work to defeat voucher proposals that would divert federal taxpayer monies away from public schools to private schools, has not gone unnoticed. She understands the importance of Early Childhood programs like Head Start and Even Start and is committed to providing education professionals with the tools they need to succeed. Her support of workers’ rights to organize by cosponsoring the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) means workers will have an advocate as the next Secretary of Labor. AFSA wishes Rep. Solis the best of luck in her new position.”

Author, Jill S. Levy, International President-AFSA is the national union of education leaders, representing over 20,000 school principals, assistant principals, supervisors and education professionals throughout the nation, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
