The Bogside Artists and J.K.Rowling
The Bogside Artists in dispute with Rowling and associates.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 21, 2008 --
It is all over a book written by one of The Bogside Artists in 1990 and which, it is said by many who have read it, bears an uncanny resemblance to Harry Potter and indeed to the substance of that series. The Bogside Artists of Derry, who are famous for their huge murals of the Troubles in the city, published the book recently because prior to the completion of their famous street gallery called The People's Gallery they were not able to do so. A local paper ran with the story of their book. The paper found themselves in big trouble with the Rowling legal brigade.
William Kelly who wrote the contoversial book called "Travels with Li Po" also received a letter from a lawyer of Rowling's agent Christopher Little."It reads," he says "like a reprimand from a medieval Pope to a mutinous monk. Absurd and depressingly arrogant, was my first reaction. Clever wordsmithing was my second reaction. I loathe solemnity as a rule, especially when it hops on a high horse and reaches for a legal threat in order to enact its sweeping will. My kids' book is what it is and being what it is and part of the real world then all people in the real world should have access to it because its true nature is that of a gift and its character is an expression of free speech - that being one of the democratic principles that millions of people have died for in two world wars. My book existed in 1990 and precedes Rowling's published first volume by six years. End of story. And it is now made available for the first time exactly as it was then. If anybody should be lodging objections it should be The Bogside Artists against the Rowling camp. This is the simple truth which is never false, needs neither words or definitions and simply knows what is the case and what is not the case. As regards what goes on in court rooms in general I have to say I do not play games and do my best to avoid them. Truth is more important than the law and ten times more important than the class games that are played under its roof. The Bogside Artists are a registered charity dedicated to helping underprivileged and damaged kids in Derry and should Rowling or her pride of lawyers wish to bring us to court because they may believe we constitute possible damage to their lucrative Harry Potter business interests or their source much good might it do them."
