Applying Principle-Centered Leadership to Online Education: The Success of The Learning House, Inc.’

Last month, Dr. Denzil Edge, founder and president of The Learning House, Inc. was honored at the Principle-Centered Leadership Program held by University of the Cumberlands, in Williamsburg, Ky. The lecture series and accompanying award ceremony are sponsored annually by the Forcht Group of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Leadership.

Established in 2006, the center has set out to provide programs and activities that enhance the development of leadership, character and good citizenship -- a mission that coincides nicely with Cumberlands’ overall academic mission of leadership, service and growth. Participants of the center’s activities are expected to learn such values as honesty, respect for service to others, sound use of time and talent and a strong work ethic.

One of these aforementioned leadership-building events is the Principle-Centered Leadership Lecture Series, of which renowned author, Dr. Stephen Covey, was the premiere speaker. Past program themes include moral leadership and patriotic leadership.

University of the Cumberlands, the location site of the lecture series, has been a partner of Learning House -- the online education provider established by Edge in 1985 -- since 2004. Based out of Louisville, Ky., Learning House specializes in helping colleges and universities offer and manage their online degree programs. Through its comprehensive list of technological and support services, Learning House has assisted more than 50 institutions, including University of the Cumberlands, in the launch of new online programs by providing all the resources and knowledge needed to design customized online campuses and grow enrollment figures.

Edge, along with three other distinguished honorees, was chosen to receive the Principle-Centered Leadership Award based upon his exemplary embodiment of this year’s lecture series thematic ideal.

Edge is an internationally known educator with extensive experience in distance education and distance learning technologies. He has been extremely active in the field of higher education in Kentucky, Florida, Scotland, Germany and Australia as a teacher and academic contributor. At the age of 28, Edge was hired by the University of Louisville to develop teacher-training programs. In this position, he developed the Learning Improvement Center, which included the first built-in television system for use by teachers and students. He has taught more than 40 distance learning courses using a variety of distance learning technologies, and he has built more than 50 online campuses.

Guided by Edge’s leadership and expertise in the distance learning field, Learning House has grown considerably. Learning House currently has more than 500 online courses available for immediate use or ready for customization.
