News Story: Illinois doctor personally affected by the Gaza Siege
Dr. Mohammad Elnatour is a young Palestinian American doctor who lives with his family in Orland Park, Illinois. Dr. Elnatour is currently occupied thinking about the latest attack on Gaza. His entire family and many friends are living in Rafah, a city in the South of Gaza where he grew up.
The first day of the bombings, seven of his former neighbors were killed. He said: “My friend Dr. Ehab El-Shaer, 36 years old, was in the Muhafatha Building (a municipal building) when the first air strike missile hit at 11:15 am on Saturday December 27th. He was killed with other members of his family and two prominent sheikhs of the town who were there.”
Since then, he has been speaking with his brother in Gaza everyday to check on him and his family of nine, who haven't had electricity or gas for more than 76 hours now. Not only are the poor suffering. Because of the siege, you cannot find flour, gas, electricity to provide to your family. Dr. Elnatour says, ”They’re not poor. But when there is no food to buy, they can't eat the money. My sister made some dough for bread hoping they will get gas soon, but the dough became sour and was thrown away. My brother had 11 gas jars saved for a situation like this, and they all are empty now with no where to get gas. They're lucky if they can find some wood to burn.”
The last time he checked on them, his brother he was covering the windows with nylon and tape. The missiles are powerful and strong, causing 30 feet damage in the ground and destroying building windows from about ½ mile away from its target. Although it’s only about 30 degrees in Gaza, it’s safer to leave the windows open to avoid the shattering of glass.
