Fort Worth, Texas (January 5, 2009) – Attorney Brian Newby, former Chief of Staff for Texas Governor Rick Perry, has returned Of Counsel to Cantey Hanger LLP law firm in Fort Worth, Managing Partner Pollard Rogers announced.

Newby, who joined Cantey Hanger in 1991 and became Partner in 1996, left in November 2004 to become Perry’s General Counsel. He was named Chief of Staff July 1, 2007 and served as co-director of the Division of Disaster Recovery and Renewal after Hurricane Ike struck Texas in 2008.

Newby said coming home to a firm such as Cantey Hanger made his decision easier. “This is the definition of returning home,” he said. It is one of the most historic and successful firms in Texas, a firm that has kept up with the needs of its clients as it tackles the business challenges of today.”

Newby’s practice area will focus on public law with an emphasis on assisting clients in regulatory, public policy and legislative issues before local, state and federal governments. “I want to assist the firm in creating a public law practice that will allow clients to more easily bridge the divide between business and government,” Newby said.

"Brian has distinguished himself as a public servant for four years working at the highest levels for our Governor,” Rogers said. “We welcome him home to Cantey Hanger and Fort Worth, where he will bring his special skills and knowledge to bear working for our clients."

Newby is a Colonel in the Texas Air National Guard, serving as the Air National Guard Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force Inspector General. His initial experience with criminal law came during his 1987-1991 stint in the U.S. Air Force. He served on the Texas Tech University Board of Regents from 1999-2005 and was Vice Chairman beginning in 2003. He was on the Board of Directors of the Tarrant Regional Water District from 1999-2004.

Newby is a graduate of Western Hills High School in Fort Worth, Texas Tech University and The University of Texas School of Law.

He is a member of the Texas Bar Association, where he has served on the State Bar Mentor Committee, is Past-President of the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Black Bar Association and a former Director of the Tarrant County Bar Association and Tarrant County Bar Foundation. He was named Outstanding Young Lawyer by the Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association in 1987.

“Since 2004, Brian has served as an important member of my staff and more importantly served the people of Texas,” said Gov. Rick Perry. “His leadership in state government will be missed, but I am certain he will be an asset once again at Cantey Hanger.”
