Lutheran Social Services Appoints Executive to Lead Pioneer Car Donation Charity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) January 5, 2009 -- David Kronberg of Winchester, Mass., has been named executive director of Good News Garage, a New England-wide program of Lutheran Social Services that was one of the nation’s first car donation charities.

Kronberg comes to the Good News Garage after ten years as founder and executive director of the Greater Lowell Community Foundation in Lowell, Mass., a philanthropic foundation and public charity that assists individuals, nonprofits, businesses, foundations and private donors to establish permanent charitable and scholarship endowments. The Foundation also has been a force in the greater Lowell area for community organizing and problem solving.

As its founding executive, Kronberg grew the new foundation to $17.5 million in assets through the creation of more than 275 charitable and scholarship endowments serving 24 municipalities.

Prior to leading the Greater Lowell Foundation, Kronberg served as the executive for a number of area charities, including the Environmental Federation of New England, the Leading Edge Information Foundation of Boston, the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, and ArtiCulture in Cambridge.

Heather Feltman, CEO of Lutheran Social Services, and Dale Eck, chair of the Good News Garage board, made the announcement jointly. “David Kronberg is the ideal person to lead Good News Garage,” they said. “He has the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership experience that will grow this groundbreaking program and enable it to provide reliable transportation for more New Englanders in need.”

Good News Garage was established in 1996 in Burlington, Vermont, and has grown into New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut, and will soon have a program in Rhode Island.
GNG has been a recipient of the Peter F. Drucker Award for Non-Profit Management and was cited by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in its Best Practice report for 1998 and 1999. GNG was honored as one of HUD's Best of the Best non-profit agencies in the U.S.

Since its founding, Good News Garage has provided more than 4,000 charitably donated vehicles to low income individuals and families, in many instances enabling them to leave the public assistance rolls and achieve economic self-sufficiency. It was one of the first programs in the nation to solicit charitable car donations, and it remains one of the few whose mission is to provide as many of those cars as possible to families in need.

“The philosophy behind Good News Garage is one of the most exciting, novel and successful charitable ideas I have ever encountered,” stated Kronberg. “I am excited about this opportunity to lead this organization into the future.”
