Kids Wish Network, Local Best Buy Grant Splurge to Young “Gamer” with Muscular Dystrophy
Angleton, TX-
Nine-year-old Christian Ballard dreamed of a Nintendo Wii system, but with the game systems flying off the shelves and the long waiting lines at stores, the chance of receiving one this year was slim. With the help of Kids Wish Network and Best Buy, this young gamer’s dream was fulfilled.
In addition to his love of video games, Christian enjoys other activities that are typical of his age, like watching dirt bike and car racing, and listening to rock music. Unlike the other third graders at his elementary school, Christian has recently had to adjust to life in a wheelchair because he suffers from a very rare form of Muscular Dystrophy that has caused his leg muscles to weaken.
Called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, this neuromuscular disorder affects males and is characterized by a lack of dystrophin protein in their muscles, resulting in a progressive loss of muscle function. The condition adversely affects the formation of bones, which, together with muscle weakness, often leads to breathing problems and cardiomyopathy (an enlarged heart).
While searching online for resources for her brave young son, Christian’s mother, Danielle, discovered “the cutest little website” for the Kids Wish Network. She contacted the organization, which grants wishes to children with life threatening illnesses, and Christian was soon on his way to a shopping spree at Best Buy for all the technological toys he could ever want. As part of his wish, Kids Wish Network also arranged for lunch at his favorite restaurant, Red Lobster, and a surprise box full of toys and games.
During his fun-filled day of shopping, Christian’s cart began to overflow as he selected $1000 worth of gifts that included new Wii and Nintendo DS systems. He has really enjoyed his new games, barely putting them down since his shopping spree.
“Christian’s Lego Star Wars game is truly his thing,” says Danielle, who explains that her son couldn’t have asked for more than what he received from Kids Wish Network. “They were so good to us.”
Kids Wish Network would like to thank the following for helping to make Christian’s wish extra special: Family Life Church, First United Methodist Church, Wal-Mart and Red Lobster.
