Wear Your Values
“Fashion is not something that exists only in dresses. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” .. Coco Chanel
Clothing and fabric scrap take up a huge amount of landfill. Add to that the environmental costs of packaging, transport, color dying, printing, and laundry and it creates an enormous and dangerous carbon footprint. This is the reason why fashion designed with recycled materials comes as a welcome an ancient fashion movement reinvented and dubbed Reconstruction.
In the 21st Century and experiencing the side effects of a throw away Prêt-à-Porter society, there are countless ways to reduce your carbon footprint and bring abundance to your economy. The choice has always been ours to support local artisans, save the planet, and create jobs in our own realms. By just a flick of the wrist in what we reach for, or dial or click on, as we shop we can save the world and our employment futures.
“Several studies have shown that buying from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community and creating jobs. Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our communities, provide the most jobs to residents.“ Source: sconnect.org
RecycledForDancing.com designs by Deborah Paulino are collectible works of art that show the nature of transformation, and draw attention to the human connection to one another and the environment. Combining an array of fabrics from different eras and areas of the world that are either surplus, recycled or vintage into wearable one of a kind couture.
The reconstruction process starts with hand washing the fabrics in oxygen bleach, then looking at the texture, shape, color, then sketching out a design. Often several pieces are used to make one piece of clothing, which can take time. Sometimes it can take weeks searching through thrift shops, to find the right elements that compliment each other and the body. Once all the elements are in place the construction begins, then fittings and finishing touches - sometimes tailoring alterations; other times embellishments such as beading, appliqué, or distressing. When the garment is finished, it is steam cleaned for any leftover dust and allergens and to de-wrinkle and refresh the fabric. The results are one of a kind sincere designs that are well-made, timeless, comfortable, and fun to wear.
