Interracial relationships and President Obama

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 26, 2009 -- We just inaugurated the first Black president, President Barack Obama. At least that is what the media and most Americans see him. If memory serves me right, Obama is half White. And it would be right to say he is our first mixed race president. Correct? I like to see him as a uniter of races … especially the Black and White communities. He is living proof that races can work together for one common goal. And he is living proof that races can unite in interracial love and bear mixed race children.

So is President Obama considered Black by masses? We have been looking for someone to bridge that racial divide; a country where we weren’t Black people or White people. So why do we choose to see Obama as one belonging to the Black people instead of seeing him for what he truly is; a man of mixed race, a man who’s background encompasses a myriad of races?

Speaking of which, Obama’s family was one true interracial family. The parents were in an interracial marriage. And we can’t forget his family composition which is Black, White, Asian, Christian, Muslim and Jewish. And don’t get me started on the languages they speak: English; Indonesian; French; Cantonese; German; Hebrew; African languages including Swahili, Luo and Igbo.

For the first time in history, we should be proud that the family in the White House actually represents the “textures and flavors of this country” as president Obama’s half sister Maya Soetoro-Ng so puts it.

I think the Obama family’s move to the White House signifies a lot; especially interracial dating and interracial marriages. Much as most of us have chosen not to see President Obama’s marriage to Michelle as an interracial marriage, I still like to believe that this interracial family is a symbolic end for the thoughts that imply people of different races and ethnic backgrounds should not date, marry and have children. About a quarter of White Americans and almost half of Black Americans belong to multiracial family according to estimates by Joshua R. Goldstein of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. And I believe with a mixed race president in the White house, we are yet to see more of interracial dating, interracial marriages and interracial families.
