Unbelievable Laos The virtual tour of Laos, built to help develop sustainable tourism.

(Free-Press-Release.com) February 1, 2009 -- Laos is known to some as “The Land of a thousand Elephants” but to others, like me, is known as “The Land which has endured the greatest bomb tonnage ever”. During the Vietnam War, Laos was put in limbo and to this day is still picking up the pieces. This limbo has stopped the clock and gives the casual tourist the sense of being in Asia 80 years ago.

Through the creative use of virtual tours, ‘Unbelievable Laos’ draws traffic to the website with a virtual tour of the country navigated by Google maps. A virtual tour is a 360 degree photo that lets you see in any direction you desire. Just by dragging on the photo and moving the mouse, one can navigate about the online image.

The project was conducted and photographed by Thomas Williams from Leicestershire in the UK, Thomas travelled the country for 4 months to capture the necessary imagery with the help from ‘Kookie’ his assistant, guide and girlfriend. Thomas also found a huge level of assistance through a local charity which supports local farmers and rural education, since Thomas’s arrival back to the UK he has produced a kids educational book with Oliver Kennett being the Author for the charity (SEDA LAOS) to distribute around Laos.

Thomas also received a great deal of help from the Laos Tourist Board, and to show his gratitude he created a Wall Calendar with some of his best photos from Laos, the tourism board now, distribute these calendars to Laos Embassies world wide, Ministers in Laos and the Royal family.

To celebrate the completion of this project ‘Wellgosh’ in Leicester have agreed to host an exhibition of ‘Unbelievable Laos’, the exhibition will consist of 6 panoramic image printed at over 2m wide. This will be an ongoing exhibition starting on the 13th of February.

“Unbelievable Laos” was a self motivated, and self funded project by an individual who recognized that one of the few hopes for the country is through sustainable tourism, with ‘sustainable’ being the key word. Through the photos displayed here and on the “Unbelievable Laos” website the photographer; Thomas C Williams hopes Laos can be recognized for what it is, and not for what it isn’t.
