(Free-Press-Release.com) February 2, 2009 --
A team of experts from Ibstock (www.ibstock.com) has run a day long practical workshop and seminar at the School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes University. The workshop looked at how bricks can be used for sustainable building and provided students with an introduction to different types of brick, with practical experience of bricklaying and an evening seminar on sustainability in brick production and specification.
The daytime practical session covered best practice bricklaying, which was designed to give students improved insight into brick specification and realising their designs in brick.
The 10 Part 2 architectural degree students that attended the workshop were all impressed with brick’s sustainability credentials as well as its versatility as a 21st Century building material. “I had no idea that so much could be created from such a simple shape,” commented one student. “The possibilities are immense.”
“The unfired clay bricks (Ibstock’s innovative Ecoterre™) have excellent sustainability credentials,” added a fellow student. He continued: “Low energy input, very low waste, fully recyclable and the bricks are manufactured in the UK. We really enjoyed building a section of wall with the range of new Ibstock bricks.”
As well as Ecoterre™, Ibstock Design Advisor, Martin Smithurst, together with two other Ibstock experts, demonstrated the benefits and features of additional Ibstock products, including Fireborn™ large format clay panels, the new Wave bricks from the Umbra range of textured architectural bricks, stock bricks and wirecut bricks.
In the evening, 60 architectural students from all years attended a seminar on sustainability in brick production and use by Dr. David Hills, Ibstock’s Environmental Manager.
