FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 3, 2009 -- Charlotte, NC (February 3, 2009)
The Charlotte social media community is combining forces to organize Twestival, a global event on February 12 to raise money and awareness for charity: water, a nonprofit organization that provides clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

Participants will gather in more than 175 cities worldwide. Charity: water gives 100% of the money raised to direct project costs, funding sustainable clean water solutions in areas of greatest need.

The Charlotte event will take place at Cans Bar and Canteen, 500 West 5th Street. Doors open at 6:00 pm and festivities start at 7:00. The evening's attractions include local celebrities, entertainment, and prizes, including a free cruise.

Inspired by a group of Londoners interested in socially conscious socializing, Twestival is a locally organized global effort.

charity: water commented: “We are beyond excited, this is such a fantastic event for charity: water in both scale, and nature. The need for, and right to clean water is universal, so I’m delighted we’re a cause that the international Twitter community is embracing.”

Why Water:
• Right now, 1.1 billion people on the planet don't have access to safe, clean drinking water. That's one in six of us.

• Unsafe water and lack of sanitation cause 80% of sickness and disease, and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.
• Of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation, 90% are children under 5 years old.

Emcee Nathan Richie, host of live performance show, “END Sessions,” on Charlotte's 1065 The END, says “I’m thrilled to be apart of this exciting and emerging Charlotte twitter community – but, to see first hand how powerful it is to pull people of various businesses, talents and interests together globally through this technology for the benefit of a larger cause that’s so important is amazing. I’m looking forward to a night of fun, entertainment and networking.”

Twitter.com is a social networking site with a base of over 4.5 million users worldwide. While the global effort was created within the Twitter community, it extends far beyond social media users; the intent is to come together as a greater community and support charity: water. None of the activities being planned for the night require any knowledge of Twitter, just a desire to have a great night out in Charlotte in support of a worthy cause.
