Was St. John's High School Right For Banning Hypnosis?
Recently, St. John-Hudson High in Kansas has been in the news for banning hypnosis for its sports team. Were they right? Is hypnosis not appropriate for high school students?
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 6, 2009 --
Superintendent James Kenworthy was quoted as saying "At the high school level, it's not appropriate. We are trying to get kids to understand who they are and what they are. It may give kids a mixed message if you can't do it on your own." Some even thought the kids might get "hooked" on it.
Is it true? If you use hypnosis, does it mean you couldn't do it on your own? Is it possible to get "hooked" on it? Is it bad if you DO get hooked on it?
“I think it shows a sad lack of education on the subject of hypnosis by the school board,” says hypnotist John Raven. “I find this decision disturbing in a public school system, whose responsibility it is to both educate students, as well as prepare them for life after school. To take away exposure to such a valuable tool is like purposefully withholding sneakers from the kids, then asking them to do their best in a sprint.”
"I have personally used hypnosis to alleviate my dependence on my asthma inhaler," Raven explains. "I just went rock-climbing this past weekend and didn't need to reach for it once. I still keep my emergency inhaler nearby, but to not have to rely on it constantly is very liberating. And it's all due to hypnosis."
"I hope the school board at St. John's takes an opportunity to educate themselves on the subject," John says. "And reverse an obviously poorly thought out decision. There are plenty of excellent sources of information on hypnosis and plenty of scientific studies on its benefits."
