Boston, MA, February 10, 2009 – Taking risks is a part of life for most musicians, but during a recession when most people are tightening their belts, should they not do the same? A tour spanning six states in six weeks is costly, time consuming and very risky. Its success also depends heavily on whether or not consumers are willing to spend money on a cover charge and perhaps a CD or t-shirt to support the artist. Some venues pay artists well, while some barely cover gas and dinner.
Vanessa is keenly aware of the risks of her endeavor. Not acting to pursue her dream, she says, is more of a risk than her six-week sojourn. “The economy didn't have anything to do with my decision to start recording the album,” says Kafka. “Where possible, I can't let it stop me from following through. My setting out to do the album was a risk in and of itself you know? I want to make this happen.”
What would make an artist assume that their music, which often can be obtained for free through file sharing and CD burning, will make consumers open their wallets? Producer, Brian Sargent, argues, “people need music [, they] need an outlet and escape for what is going on in the world.” Vanessa agrees, stating “Bad times call for inspiration. […] at the end of the day you can't stop living your life. While everything else seems to be falling apart, the pursuit of your dream is the one thing that can remain constant. The approach may just require some adjusting. But that's easy enough to do when you keep your eye on the prize.”
For anyone who has seen Vanessa play live, it is clear that her tenacity is equally matched by her skill as a songwriter and a performer. Her backing band is a group of top-notch area musicians including; Berklee College of Music alumni Brian Sargent, Carl Puglisi, and Bryan Percivall, as well as Matt Beals, and Andy Sutherland. The Tour Kickoff Celebration will be held at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge on Thursday, February 12th at 9:00pm. Tickets are on sale for $9 at www.ticketmaster.com.
