Lansing & Novi, Michigan, March 1, 2009 – The principles in David Meerman Scott’s book, The New Rules of Marketing & PR, are being used in a digital media class, New Media Driver’s License. This digital media and social networks class is being offered through Michigan State University, a major public university located in Lansing, Michigan and Walsh College Novi campus, a Detroit area business school offering undergraduate and graduate classes.
The New Rules of Marketing & PR guides marketing professionals on how they can reach their buyers online through blogs, podcasting, news releases, viral marketing and social networks. With this evolving technology the standard rules of marketing don’t always work. Scott contends that the old rules of marketing and PR are ineffective in an online world.
Scott feels consumers on the Web are looking for a different experience – not the usual, “here’s my ad, isn’t it pretty.” Consumers online are interested in specific information that will help them make informed decisions. Standard print ad formats normally are too general for what consumers are looking for.
Scott says it is important to define consumer personas and market to each group in their specific language to create relationships. Internet consumers are looking for a connection, so gearing online marketing to a more personal level goes quite a long way. With everyone vying for consumers’ attention, and the saturation of ads on the internet, in your face, hard sell marketing can alienate consumers.
Scott’s book covers many more principles of marketing on the internet. By using all these principals New Media Driver’s License students experience a different area each week. Each student authors a blog where they share what they have learned and their experiences in connection to a specific assignment. Being that this is the very first class of its type at either of the universities, both undergraduates and graduates are learning a wealth of information that many students are not able to include on their resume. The class is also attended by professionals from the business world looking to get up to speed on the new digital media.
