Keene, Ontario – Only 90 minutes east of Toronto, there is a lakeside cottage resort that provides a whole lot more than comfortable cottages and good fishing. Owned by the Elmhirst family for four generations, Elmhirst’s Resort (http://www.elmhirst.com) has gone through many changes over the years. From its start as a rustic fishing camp, Elmhirst’s Resort has transformed over the years into a premier cottage resort facility that caters to an international market year round. Today the resort property of 240 acres encompass 30 luxury cottages, two dining rooms, health club and spa, riding stables, air strip, and a genuine working farm.

Unlike other cottage resorts, Elmhirst’s Resort produces much of the food that is prepared in their kitchen. This way, they can ensure that their customers are served only the best quality and freshest foods. Grain-fed Guaranteed Black Angus Beef cattle are bred and raised in the fields overlooking the resort. Farm fresh eggs, supplied by the resort’s free range chickens, are collected daily. On-site gardens and greenhouse provide fresh herbs, vegetables and cut flowers throughout the year, and the resort’s orchard provides fresh fruit. Resort guests are invited to view the chickens as they make their way to the barn and watch the Black Angus herd graze in the fields surrounding the resort. Elmhirst’s Resort has become extremely self-sufficient in growing much of its own food supply. The fresh home-grown ingredients are used extensively by Elmhirst’s chefs in preparing meals served in both The Hearthside Room and The Wild Blue Yonder Pub, the resort’s two dining rooms.

“At Elmhirst′s Resort, our guests are offered the best local produce throughout the year. Garden fresh vegetables are featured in season; herbs and sprouts are grown year round in the greenhouse; our farm fresh eggs are served for breakfast and our Elmhirst′s Own Black Angus Beef is bred and raised on site. Local producers are sought out for the freshest ingredients. Our commitment to home-grown is everywhere,” states Anne Marshall, Director Sales & Marketing. “Even our wine cellar features only Ontario wines, many not readily available in liquor stores. Our guests appreciate the extra effort that we take to provide the finest quality food and beverages,” adds Marshall.

For today’s vacationer, much of the appeal of any resort vacation or holiday accommodation lies in the quality of the food it serves. As well, more than ever before, people are increasingly concerned about the quality and safety of the foods that they consume. Every year, the sales of organic produce and organic meats have risen sharply. When one thinks of fresh food they picture vegetables picked right out of the garden, or products bought from a market and prepared immediately. Elmhirst’s Resort’s working farm and gardens takes freshness and quality a step further.
