According to the National Coalition on Health Care, more than 25 percent said that housing problems resulted from medical debt, including the inability to make rent or mortgage payments and the development of bad credit ratings. About 1.5 million families lose their homes to foreclosure every year due to unaffordable medical costs. In a 2008 study, participants who averaged at least 2 health club visits per week over years incurred at least $1,252 less in health care costs in year 2 than did those who visited on average less than once per week.
