Discover Business Basics to Increase Profits

CPA Ross Collier has written a short report which reminds us of strategies that have been lost in the boom days but which every business owner should be revisiting.

One 'Secret' he reveals is 'Always Ask for Feedback'. Ross says it is a simple thing to ask your customers for feedback. So simple, most people will argue feedback is not new, let alone a secret. But he asks, how many businesses actually put it into practice? How many businesses or business people think they know better than their customers? Or worse ask their customers for feedback but ignore what they are told? He says getting feedback from customers and then acting on it is one of the single most powerful strategies any business can employ. It works for small and big businesses, online or offline. So why do so few follow it? It is so simple, easy and foolproof Ross concludes it must be a secret otherwise everyone would do it.

Another 'Secret' revealed in the report is 'Plan Everything'. While he acknowledges planning should not be a mystery, he points out as a CPA who consults with many business people, few actually plan. It must be a secret he says. Ross argues planning is one of the most obvious, simple and necessary actions to take in any business. Not to plan is to ask for trouble. As he says, if you don't know where you are going how are you going to get there? From Ross' point of view knowing what to plan and how to plan can be learnt. In fact he says it is easy and enjoyable when you are shown how. Without a plan you are running your business blindfolded.

A final example from his report is called 'Understand Your Business Drivers'. This, Ross says, is getting more technical but the pay off can be enormous. It is about finding the keys to a business's profits. He says that in every business there are a few variables that have a big influence on the bottom line. Discovering these literally puts owners or managers in the driver's seat. Ross has found that often these drivers are not necessarily financial or are a combination of financial and non financial. They don't need to be complicated. He gives several examples such as the number of sales per day,the average gross margin,the number of products sold or average freight cost. Finding these drivers will increase profits in any business.

Revisiting proven strategies, that have stood the test of time, Ross believes will help businesses thrive and survive in the current climate.
