Dr. Pamela Frank, BSc (Hons), ND a licensed naturopathic doctor at Forces of Nature Wellness in Toronto, has devised a novel new treatment for endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition where cells that normally line the uterus, escape into the abdominal cavity, adhere to internal organs and cause intense pain as they enlarge in response to monthly estrogen fluctuations. Endometriosis affects up to 10 % of all women. Recent research suggested that an enzyme normally found in the lining of the uterus may be the root cause of the condition. In normal women, this enzyme is active for the first half of the menstrual cycle then down regulates. In endometriosis women the enzyme is active throughout the entire cycle. This causes the lining cells to be active throughout the entire cycle possibly promoting their escape from the uterus and interfering with implantation of a fertilized egg, leading to fertility problems. Melatonin is a simple natural treatment that can be used to suppress telomerase activity through the second half of the menstrual cycle. “I have a number of women currently taking melatonin to treat their endometriosis symptoms and also to enhance fertility” says Dr. Frank. In only 3 months, 6 patients who were previously resistant to conventional treatment for fertility (including IVF and IUI) have successfully conceived. "It’s an exciting option for women who are struggling with endometriosis pain and infertility. There is virtually no downside, melatonin is inexpensive, natural, safe and enhances sleep. Even if conception is not a concern it can help women who have already undergone laparoscopy for endometriosis prevent recurrence" states Dr. Frank. Many women may have endometriosis and not be aware of it. A recent study recommended that any woman with "unexplained infertility" should undergo laparoscopy to determine whether endometriosis is the cause. "Due to its safety and effectiveness, I would suggest a trial of melatonin before undergoing laparoscopy for most women" says Frank.
