Friesan Fire tries for Fair Grounds’ sweep in Louisiana Derby
Friesan Fire, an early favorite to win the Kentucky Derby, is a heavy favorite to win this weekend’s Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.
The three-year-old thoroughbred has already won the first two Kentucky Derby prep races at the Fair Grounds, the first horse to capture both stakes races leading to the Louisiana Derby since Fly Cry in 1994.
Friesan Fire is a 5-2 favorite at LegendZ Racebook, one of the most popular online Horse Racing wagering sites.
Owned by Fox Hill Farm and Vinery Stables, Friesan Fire won the Lecomte and Risen Star races and will try to sweep the Fair Grounds’ three Kentucky Derby prep races with a win in Saturday's $600,000 Louisiana Derby.
The horse, which has won three of his six career starts, will be ridden by Gabriel Saez and will start from post nine.
Patena is the second favorite at 7-2, followed by Giant Oak at 4-1.
Other top challengers include Risen Star runner-up Flying Pegasus and Papa Clem, which finished second in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita last month.
Flying Pegasus, a runner-up in the Risen Star race, is at 8-1 odds at LegendZ Racebook. Flying Pegasus won his first two starts and was second in the Futurity at Belmont Park in September.
Papa Clem will be making his first start outside of California, as well as first on a dirt track. The colt will start from the No. 8 post and will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano. Owned by Bo Hirsch, Papa Clem finished second in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita in his first stakes appearance.
Other horses, with odds, are: Free Country, 12-1; Soul Warrior, 20-1; Terrain, 10-1; Uno Mas, 12-1; Nowhere to Hide, 15-1.
The Louisiana Derby starts at 5:45 pm ET on Saturday.
