Bagpipe and Drum competition at the 14th Annual Scottish Games Gathering

(Free-Press-Release.com) March 17, 2009 -- Residents of the normally peaceful Bakersfield College adjacent neighborhoods might think they are deep in the Scottish Highlands Saturday morning April 4th, even catching a glimpse of kilted pipers and drummers, confirming the haunting sounds of the highlands they thought they only imagined in their dreams.

Those sounds are the participants warming up for a fully sanctioned Bagpipe and Drum competition at the 14th Annual Scottish Games Gathering sponsored by the Kern County Scottish Society. The event is hosted by the Tehachapi Mountain Pipes and Drums and features close to 50 competitors from all over California, some arriving from as far away as Lake Tahoe and San Diego.


These competitors range in age from 8 to 70 and aim to play well enough to capture the coveted Bagpipe Bobble Head Trophy.

Points earned at this and other competitions throughout the year count toward an overall champion in each piping and drumming class.

To count toward the year long overall cup chase, pipers and drummers must compete at events sanctioned by the Western United States Pipe Band Association and world class judges must be brought in. Judging the pipers will be Aaron Shaw, piper for the Celtic Band, the Wicked Tinkers and John Partanen, noted world class bagpipe soloist, historian and clinician. Judging the drummers will be Ed Best, a much sought after Pipe Band Drum Section
leader and clinician to world class pipe bands throughout the world.

The Tehachapi Mountain Pipes and Drums continue to sponsor the event in an effort to promote great piping in the area, which continues to grow exponentially every year. By next 210, they hope to add a full pipe band competition, bringing in hundreds of pipers to Kern County.
