It can be overwhelming to decide which health club you are going to join. Not only is it based on a convenient location, preference of equipment present but it is also a financial investment. You are not going to want to pay your fees if you are not enjoying your health club or if you are not getting there enough. While it is important to consider pricing, equipment and location, it is even more vital to consider safety.
A man in Maryland in 2005 was working out at the health club and collapsed from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). There was no Automated External Defibrillator (AED) or CPR trained individual on site and emergency help did not get there in enough time. A woman in 2003 who was an attorney for the Illinois House of Representatives was working out at a health club and also collapsed from SCA. Their stories among others have made an influence for new stricter legislation regarding AEDs and properly trained individuals on site.
Recent legislation has made it mandatory for all health clubs in Illinois to have an AED on site and have a trained individual on site. The new legislation is important because SCA affects nearly 1,000 people each day and normally away from a hospital. Places like health clubs are important places for AED’s because you are involved in cardiovascular activities. The aspects stated above are important decision factors for joining a health club however there is one more factor that is extremely important. You want to make sure when you are going to the clubs to make your decision that there is an AED present and that is up to date and working. Therefore, it is important to ask the question, “Does your health club have an AED?” Studies show that with CPR and an AED present the chances of survival increase from 5% to 85%.
Brian Leonard, President and CEO of Code Red thinks that it is important that everyone is aware of where the AED is in your health club and how to use it. He explains, “When working out especially at a health club with other people you should be aware of the people around you.” He went on to explain the seriousness of SCA, “If you see anyone drop to the ground shout for help, have someone call 911, begin CPR and have someone that works at the club get the AED.” He emphasizes the importance of an AED, “It is so important to have an AED on site especially in health clubs because we are noticing an increase level of SCA victims going untreated.”
