Los Angeles, CA -- Producer, writer and director, Angelo Bell is contemplating the best way to reach an appreciative audience for his short film collection, "Pulp Fusion: The Raw Shorts." However, Angelo is taking a different approach. He's leaving the United States to do find them.
Pulp Fusion: The RAW Shorts Collection is a collection of low budget independent short films that spans the gamut of genres. There's art house fare, a thriller, a comedy/satire, drama and some action. The collection covers over four years of independent filmmaking for Angelo and his staff at 319 Productions, FloodGate Media Inc and Film Genesis. LLC. The films were conceived and made in the United States, but Angelo believes the film has bigger audiences in the United Kingdom, India, France, Australia and Canada.
"As a one-off" Angelo says, "These films fit nicely any American film festival. But as a collection of short films, the overall theme feels more 'arty.' Other places in the world aren't so caught up with blockbuster films. That's who we need to reach.
In 2007 Angelo Bell and producing partner Daryll Harkless set a new benchmark at the Los Angeles ShortsFest when FOUR of their films were accepted and screened at the festival. When distributors didn't come calling, the pair embarked on a journey of self-distribution.
"In my head there used to be a huge stigma attached to a direct-to-DVD distribution," Angelo quips. "DVD was where I thought failed films went to die. Definitely not true." Angelo studied the Direct to DVD market for eighteen months before deciding to release the film himself. He noticed an opportunity for independent filmmakers to in effect have a global release through DVD distribution.
However independent filmmakers cannot follow the path of studio film distribution because most aren't as familiar to the general public as Sony Pictures, Dreamworks, MGM or Paramount. Indies must build their audience and find unconventional ways to connect with them. Angelo has a process: "Creating a person-to-person dialog via a website, blog, using social media and exceptional customer service is the best way to obtain customers," Angelo says.
Included in the RAW Shorts collection are five films. "Renounced" - a heroin addict risks everything in a desperate attempt to get clean; "Valerie & Sid" - on the lamb in a hotel room, two women face off; one is a wildcard assassin, the other a vulnerable office secretary; "Get Spielberg" - Four wannabe Hollywood movie stars inadvertently kidnap the most famous director in the world while trying to get their film produced; "I Know Who Shot You" - A businessman receives a call from a psychic who claims to have knowledge about his pending murder; "The First Time" - Two thieves are forced to deal with psychotic repercussions when their robbery attempt goes horribly wrong.
