Bashar and Salma Participate in the 16th LG Dead Sea Ultramarathon

Jordanian artist Bashar Ghazawi and Algerian artist Salma Ghazali will participate in the 16th LG Dead Sea Ultramarathon (LG DSUM), as they will run the 4.2 kilometer Junior Marathon, and share in the children’s joyful experience of this global event. The Society for Care of Neurological Patients (SCNP) also recently announced the latest on the runners registering in the 16th LG DSUM in Jordan, scheduled on April 10th 2009, under the patronage of HRH Prince Raad Bin Zeid, the Chief Chamberlain, as the number of participants mounted 3500 participants to date, with the door still open for registration.
This 16th incarnation of the LG DSUM is witnessing an unprecedented international and professional participation; running in this year’s marathon are two of Ethiopia’s most famous runners, Habte Dibaba and Madefro Shiferaw who are sponsored by LG Electronics .

The two Ethiopian runners have run in a number of other internationally-acclaimed marathons; Habte Dibaba, born on 21/11/1978, has participated in the Addis Ababa Half Marathon, the Abebe Bikila International Marathon Addis Ababa, and the Treviso International Marathon in Italy. Madefro Shiferaw, on the other hand, was born on 18/05/1981, and has participated in the Abebe Bikila International Marathon Addis Ababa and the Addis Ababa Moha Marathon.

Participation in this year’s LG DSUM does not exclude to those suffering from mobility or mental problems, as, in keeping with the directives of HRH Raad Bin Zeid, the Chief Chamberlain, this special stratum of the local community will participate in all the marathon’s activities. With LG’s sponsorship, 8 individuals with mental disabilities from Jerash Welfare and Rehabilitation Center will participate in the LG DSUM, in addition to a number of special needs children who, despite their disabilities and difficulty of movement, decided to participate in this important event, reaffirming their constructive role in helping their fellow citizens of the patients of the SCNP.
The LG DSUM consists of five runs, the Ultramarathon (50 km), the marathon (42 km), the half-marathon (21 km), the Fun Run (10 km), and Junior Marathon (4.2 km).

It is worth mentioning that the official sponsors of the LG DSUM are: LG Electronics, the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), Aquafina, Emirates Airlines, Jordan Television, Picasso, Kassab, Scholl, Moonlight for Tourism and Travel, Sawt Al Ghad radio station, Sunny FM, Grand Hyatt Amman, Layaleena magazine, Cozmo, National Paints, Addustour newspaper, Jordan Today magazine, Movenpick, and supporting government organizations like the Public Security and Civil Defense.
The LG DSUM, the main fund-raising event for the SCNP, raises awareness towards the Society's existence, provides neurological patients with medical aid, and helps cover the costs of necessary surgeries. It also aims to increase awareness towards the benefits of running, by gathering people of different age groups, from all around the globe, to join in this unique event to run to the lowest point on earth.
